Our Bench Campaign
During the holiday period of 2018, Watoto Read started a giving campaign to raise funds to build benches for school children living in refugee camps in Goz Beida, Chad. Currently, many classes are taught in unfurnished rooms, with children sitting on thin mats on the dirt floor. Without benches or desks, not only are the children uncomfortable, but they don’t have a good writing surface, making it harder to learn.
The campaign started on #GivingTuesday November 27th and ran through the month of December. The campaign raised over $11,300! Watoto Read is grateful to all who generously donated. In January 2019, $10,300 was wired to Jesuit Refugee Services to build the first 100 benches from Watoto Read.
Throughout 2019, Watoto Read will continue to fundraise to build benches as one of our primary areas of focus. We invite you to donate toward a bench that children in the schools will use. If you’re looking for gifts for those who are hard to shop for or perhaps already have all they need, consider giving a donation to Watoto Read in their honor.
- Each bench consists of a desk and connected seat, and seats up to 5 children
- Benches will be built locally, by refugees in the camps
- The cost for each bench is $103; you can fund an entire bench or provide a share (one
seat) on the bench for $20.
Purchase a Full Bench – $103
Purchase Shares of a Bench – $20/ea
